Last night, I sat down for a follow-up interview with Mr. Dennis Tobler, a 30+ year veteran of the sports betting industry here in Las Vegas. It was a heartwarming moment as Dennis waxed nostalgic of his first trips to this city to wager on sports, stepping into the smoke-filled turf clubs of the mid 70s on the Strip, and meeting Vegas legendary oddsmaker Bob Martin at the Churchill Downs race and sports book. Through our hour-long talk, he chronicled the pioneering efforts of the strong, ingenious and independent operators who paved the way for today’s casino-housed modern sports books. He told it as only a true insider and personal eye witness to the actual events can do.
